The Position Genentech (Research and Early Development) seeks a
talented and highly motivated Senior/Principal Scientist to design
and lead implementation of novel, first-in-class, interactive data
visualization and analysis tools for integrative genomics. These
tools will support our large-scale cellular and tissue profiling
initiatives integrating sequencing and imaging technologies in
projects that span the interface of human genetics, functional and
perturbational genomics, molecular biology, disease model
engineering, and advanced computational methodology. In this role,
you will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of computational
biologists, machine learning scientists and engineers, software and
data engineers as we test new types of hypotheses through the novel
integration of emerging data types, particularly single-cell
resolution sequencing and imaging perturbation assays. Job duties
and responsibilities will include: Creating effective, beautiful,
and usable interactive data analysis interfaces to visualize,
explore and interrogate integrated data from diverse technologies
and biological systems. Designing new data visualization modes to
help bench and computational scientists understand large scale
multi-omic experiments Developing highly performant, responsive,
interactive analysis software for large datasets Collaborating with
our computational and lab scientists on publications in leading
conferences and journals reporting on the application of your tools
in the discovery of new translational biology and/or the
methodological advances in interactive data analysis embodied in
these tools. Understanding and conceptualizing the complex,
emerging needs of our scientists, whether they are working at the
keyboard or the bench. Planning and prioritizing complex scientific
software projects in conjunction with scientific collaborators and
other stakeholders. Collaborating with local and off-shore
engineering teams to support your software development efforts.
Effectively articulating and communicating strategies, ideas, goals
and progress to departmental, cross-functional and senior
management. Contributing to the broader scientific community
through open-source software development. Successful candidates
will meet many of the following requirements: PhD. (or higher) in a
quantitative field such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics,
Biostatistics, Computational Biology or related fields. 5+ years
relevant experience (including any graduate school) in biomedical
data visualization and analysis. Seniority of position will depend
on experience and other factors Demonstrated excellence in the
design and implementation of modern data visualization systems and
experience with JavaScript and modern web technologies, and
high-level languages for data analysis such as Python and/or R
Record of collaborative publications applying visualization and
analysis tools to infer new biology and/or the methodological
advances in genomic visualization and interactive data analysis.
Record of publishing impactful research artifacts: open source
projects, interactive software tools, and/or others as applicable.
Hands-on experience wrangling, analyzing and visualizing biomedical
data. Although not a requirement, additional consideration is given
to candidates with experience working with single cell RNA-seq,
ATAC-seq, and multi-modal assays, and/or with high resolution
imaging-based phenotypic screening experiments. Enthusiastic about
working in a scientific environment, especially one focused on drug
discovery and development. Have a flexible learning mindset and be

expected salary range for this position based on the primary
location of California is $144,130 - $267,670. Actual pay will be
determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic
location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A
discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and
